I am expecting a notification any day from McMurray hatchery that our first batch of chicks have shipped. We are excited for their arrival. We have made a lot of changes and improvements to our chicken system since last year and a few of the changes are yet to be tested. That makes me nervous.
One of the first changes is the new brooder that I built to accommodate 200 chicks at a time without occupying every free bit of square footage in my garage. I call it “the nursery” because that is where the chicks will live for their first 7-10 days. It is a multi-level luxury condo for chickens with all the latest amenities- heat lamps, hardware cloth perimeter, water nipples, and feed troughs.
The biggest concern right now is the chicken food. We bought a couple of IBC totes (300 gallon plastic cube) to store the feed. They are not as fancy or convenient as a feed bin, but they were affordable and are fairly easy to move with the tractor. The feed mill will create a custom blend of meal, but the custom feed is more expensive. Their standard chick starter feed is reasonable, but for them to deliver in bulk, there is a 2 ton minimum. TWO TONS!!! Wow, 4000 lbs. of chicken feed at one time.
